What is a Pay Matrix Level?
After the 7th Pay Commission, the old “Pay Band + Grade Pay” system was replaced by a Pay Matrix, which assigns a level to each job. For example:
- Excise Constable is in Level 4 of the pay matrix.
Each level in the matrix has a starting basic pay and then increases in fixed steps (called “increments”) over time.
Pay Level 4 Means:
- Basic Pay starts at ₹25,500
- Maximum can go up to ₹81,100 (as per service length and promotions)
- On top of this basic pay, you get allowances like:
- DA (Dearness Allowance)
- HRA (House Rent Allowance)
- TA (Travel Allowance)
- Risk or uniform allowance (if applicable)
So your in-hand salary will be more than the basic pay — typically ₹30,000–₹35,000 per month to start, depending on posting location and allowances.
Old vs New Format
Term | Old Format | New Format (Post 7th CPC) |
---|---|---|
Pay Band | ₹5200–20200 | Replaced by Pay Matrix |
Grade Pay | ₹1,900 | Covered in Level 4 matrix |
Pay Matrix Level | Not used | Level 4 |
Starting Basic Salary | Not fixed | ₹25,500 |
Here is a simplified Pay Matrix Chart (7th Pay Commission) showing basic pay for different Pay Levels, including Level 4 used for the Excise Constable (ABA25) post in Chhattisgarh:
Government Pay Matrix Table (Levels 1 to 10)
Level | Starting Basic Pay (₹) | Annual Increment (₹ approx.) | Maximum Basic Pay (₹) |
---|---|---|---|
Level 1 | 18,000 | 500–600 | 56,900 |
Level 2 | 19,900 | 600–700 | 63,200 |
Level 3 | 21,700 | 700–800 | 69,100 |
Level 4 | 25,500 | 800–900 | 81,100 |
Level 5 | 29,200 | 1,000 | 92,300 |
Level 6 | 35,400 | 1,100–1,200 | 1,12,400 |
Level 7 | 44,900 | 1,400 | 1,42,400 |
Level 8 | 47,600 | 1,500 | 1,51,100 |
Level 9 | 53,100 | 1,600 | 1,67,800 |
Level 10 | 56,100 | 1,700 | 1,77,500 |
How to Read the Chart:
- The Level defines your pay scale range.
- Basic Pay starts at the amount listed and grows every year with a fixed increment.
- You also receive DA (Dearness Allowance), HRA, TA, and other perks on top of the basic.
For Excise Constable (ABA25), your Level 4 starting pay is ₹25,500 + allowances, and your salary can go up to ₹81,100 basic over your career.
